Summer Book Club is BACK during June and July!
JUNE Book Selection: “Wonder” (R. J. Palacio )The June selection is a family and intergenerational book club option.
All ages have enjoyed reading “Wonder” together. The book is available in hardcover, paperback, e-book, audio, and even mp3 download from local bookstores and online book dealers. Check out the Nashville Public Library for a copy as well. There is a companion book, “We’re All Wonders” by the same author for beginning readers. We’ll meet together on the evening of Saturday, June 30, at a local site for a quick picnic dinner together and time of conversation and discussion.
August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER, now a #1 New York Times bestseller and included on the Texas Bluebonnet Award master list, begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.
JULY Book Selection: “Accidental Saints: Finding God in All the Wrong People” (Nadia Bolz-Weber)
Our July book is for adults who enjoy faith conversations that challenge their own understanding of what it means to be a follower of Christ. It is available in hardcover, paperback, Kindle, and audiobook formats from most local bookstore and online book dealers. Site and date TBD.
In Accidental Saints, New York Times best-selling author Nadia Bolz-Weber invites readers into a surprising encounter with what she calls “a religious but not-so-spiritual life.” Tattooed, angry and profane, this former standup comic turned pastor stubbornly, sometimes hilariously, resists the God she feels called to serve. But God keeps showing up in the least likely of people—a church-loving agnostic, a drag queen, a felonious Bishop and a gun-toting member of the NRA.
As she lives and worships alongside these “accidental saints,” Nadia is swept into first-hand encounters with grace—a gift that feels to her less like being wrapped in a warm blanket and more like being hit with a blunt instrument. But by this grace, people are transformed in ways they couldn’t have been on their own.
