The youth first challenged the church to go green by their decision to stop using disposable plates, silverware, and cups as a part of their Sunday night dinners. Each week the youth rinse and fill up the dishwasher (several times!) with their dishes at the end of their meals. The church council decided to accept that challenge. Click the Read more... link below to find out other actions that BUMC has taken over the last year to be green!
- The Stewardship Committee has placed paper recycle bins in every room. Volunteers collect & sort the paper. Paper that can be re-used is pulled out and used in a variety of ways. Look this fall for some of our recycled paper to appear in the pew for persons to use to make notes during the sermon and in the children's worship bags to use for their creative artwork during worship.
- In January 2009, we switched to emailing our newsletter to persons who have Internet capabilities. We also began using email for church committee notices and communications. The Youth group set up a safe social networking group to help share their communication quickly.
- A recycle basket is placed next to the Welcome Center exit as a last reminder to recycle. This has been very effective for collecting worship bulletins.
- Signs have been posted at each light switch to remind us to turn off the lights.
- The Trustees have set guidelines for reasonable temperatures in the building and thermostats that can be set to work according to a preset “temperature schedule” are in use throughout the building.
- The Children’s Ministry asked children to create posters to remind us to care for all of creation. These posters are displayed throughout the church to remind us to be intentional in our caring for the earth through recycling, energy conservation, and more.
- We’ve discovered the member mailboxes are the perfect size to store that favorite mug you decide to bring from home. We also have church coffee cups on hand for coffee during fellowship time. We are also providing a Styrofoam recycle box in the Small Fellowship Hall Kitchen. Simply rinse out your Styrofoam cup and put it in that specific recycle bin. A volunteer takes it to a place that will recycle Styrofoam.
Thanks for helping us to take care of God’s creation at Bellevue UMC! |
